On Becoming a Daddy (for Russ)

She has her father’s eyes
His intensity…his flashes of brilliance
She got these from Jeff, his DNA is in her
She is his offspring

We created her together, out of love
I thought we would raise her together

But life can be unspeakably hard
He suffered inside, such darkness
Madness, cloaked in sadness, in cycles
And in the end, he succumbed to it
And Zoe lost her father

What would I do?
Would I be both mother and father
As so many single parents must?
I knew I would do whatever I had to
It was all about what she needed

Who could imagine the redemption of loss?
When Russ entered our lives
Gently, patiently, willing to honor the past
I guess I never imagined how deeply
He would connect with the child Jeff and I made

How he and she would bond and grow close
So many games and routines that are theirs alone

And how fiercely he would love her
“Our daughter,” he calls her, and she is
For while never expecting her to forget her father
Russ has become her DADDY

I LOVE YOU, RUSTY
THANK YOU

(p.s. after all we have been through, I was thrilled to my soul to hear Zoe say this morning, "I can't wait for it to be FATHER'S DAY!!!!!" Here's the inside of the card she made for Russ)
